Research Environment & Equipment
Our laboratory occupies Rooms 703–705 and 711 on the 7th floor and Room 612 on the 6th floor of the Chemistry Building. We also share Room 615, a student office, with the Atobe–Shinoda laboratory.
The rooms are equipped for organic synthesis, photophysical and other property measurements, theoretical calculations, and related research.
Room 711 — Organic Synthesis Laboratory
This laboratory is used for organic synthesis, reaction workup, separation, and purification.

Used for organic synthesis, workup, and purification involving volatile solvents under local exhaust ventilation.

A benchtop fume hood suppresses the spread of solvent vapors and provides local exhaust ventilation during experiments.

Used to remove organic solvents under reduced pressure.

Four rotary evaporators in total allow efficient concentration of reaction mixtures and fractions.

Independent temperature control of up to five reaction vessels facilitates screening of synthetic reactions and crystallization conditions.

Used for small-scale vacuum distillation and sublimation purification.

Used with chiral columns to determine enantiomeric excess.

Used to separate and purify mixtures according to molecular size.
Room 612 — Measurement Room
A darkroom for emission spectroscopy, fluorescence lifetime measurements, microscopy, and related optical measurements.

Emission spectra can be measured rapidly using an R400-7-SR reflection probe. Two units are available.

Used for fluorescence spectroscopy. The system also includes an ILF-835 integrating-sphere unit and an ETC-815 water-cooled Peltier cell holder.

Used to observe luminescent solid samples and record images and videos with a digital camera.

Attached to the fluorescence microscope for microscale emission spectroscopy.

Used to measure fluorescence lifetimes of solution and solid samples and evaluate emission dynamics.

Used as a picosecond pulsed excitation source for fluorescence lifetime measurements.

Used with liquid nitrogen for spectroscopic measurements at low temperatures.

A compact high-vacuum pumping system combining a turbomolecular pump and a dry pump; used with the cryostat.

Enables high-speed centrifugation under cooling and is used to separate suspensions into pellets and supernatants.
Room 703 — Measurement Room
This room is used for thermal analysis and polarimetry and also houses reagent storage and two refrigerator/freezer units.

Measures endothermic and exothermic heat flow during heating or cooling to evaluate melting, crystallization, glass transitions, and related thermal events.

Simultaneously measures mass changes and differential thermal behavior during heating to evaluate decomposition, desolvation, and related processes.

Measures specific optical rotation of chiral compounds under temperature-controlled conditions.

Used for safe refrigerated and frozen storage of reagents.
Room 704 — Student Office
Students use their assigned desks for literature searches, data analysis, preparation of research and conference presentations, and manuscript writing.

Each student has an assigned desk for literature searches, data analysis, and preparation of research materials.

A shared computer is available for general laboratory work and data backup.
Room 705 — PI Office
The room includes a space for discussions and workstations for theoretical calculations.

Used for small-group discussions.

Gaussian is used to calculate molecular structures, electronic states, excited states, and related properties.
